I grew up in a resort area where the local youth began working at an early age to meet the service needs of a very expanded population. Most of the available employment was in the service and hospitality industries. Fortunately, the area was also a fishing center. I was able to experience occasional employment with both commercial and charter fishing operations and I spent two summers on New York State's largest commercial fishing dock. My responsibilities included operation of forklifts, booms and industrial staplers. I stocked, sold and maintained inventory; cleaned and maintained refrigeration equipment; pumped fuel; and assembled, packed and handled commercial fish cartons.
